History of Bratislava Airport

Slovakia's primary international airport is Bratislava Airport. It was given that name shortly after Slovakia gained its independence in 1993 in honor of General Milan Rastislav Tefánik, whose plane crashed nearby in 1919. Letisko M. R. Štefánika owned and operated the airport during that time.

The newly established airline Czechoslovak Airlines launched the first regular flight between Prague and Bratislava in 1923. At that time, Vajnory, about 3 km from the current airport, served as Bratislava's airport. Construction on the current airport began in 1948 after preparations were made in 1947. Two runways were built, and the airport opened in 1951.

Although the number of passengers decreased to just over 1.4 million in 2012 due to the economic downturn and the demise of Slovak Airlines, SkyEurope, Air Slovakia, and Seagle Air, it increased again after 2014. In 2018, the airport recorded the highest number of passengers. The Ministry of Transport, Construction, and Regional Development of the Slovak Republic is the sole business owner as of September 2014.
